Abstract Neo-Moorish architecture in Tunis, which developed primarily during the first half of the 20th century, belongs to an artistic trend marked by Orientalism. It borrows elements from the local traditional habitat —such as the moucharabieh, skiffa, and patio— not necessarily for their original function, but for their aesthetic and symbolic value. This stylistic reconfiguration takes place within the context of urban and architectural modernity, involving new materials, new construction standards, and evolving lifestyles. The patio, a central and structuring element of the traditional Tunisian house, is frequently adopted in these villas. Yet, it undergoes a major transformation: it no longer appears as a sky-open space. It is often covered by an upper floor or a dome, thereby losing its essential bioclimatic functions (natural ventilation, zenithal light, connection to rainwater) and sometimes even its spatial centrality. Its status becomes ambiguous: is it still a patio, or merely a hall, an antechamber, a covered salon? This configuration is not isolated; we also observe a dilution of the term « patio » to designate circulation spaces or enclosed interior rooms. This presentation aims to analyze this transformation. We hypothesize that the patio, in this architecture, becomes a decontextualized architectural sign. Its metamorphosis reveals not so much an imitation as a profound reinterpretation, adapting domestic spatiality to the needs of a clientele that was often European or Westernized. We will therefore seek to identify the new functions of this covered space (circulation, distribution, prestige) and to understand what replaces it as the heart of the house: a European-style salon, a monumental staircase, a terrace? To answer these questions, our method is based on the comparative analysis of a corpus of Tunisian villas designed by architects such as Raphaël Guy, Victor Valensi, and Jacques Marmey. This morphological reading will be informed by an approach drawing from the anthropology of space, allowing us to question the gap between form (the « patio » sign) and use, as well as the redefinition of domestic centralities. The objective is neither to judge this transformation nor to regret a

Abstract This paper aims to analyse the representation of inner courtyards and patios in Hélé Béji’s book L’Œil du jour (The eye of the day). Inspired by the autobiographical genre, this novel questions our relationship to space and to the act of dwelling, from the perspective of the family home, the house’s patio, located on El Marr Street, within Tunis medina. More than mere scenery, the inner courtyards and more particularly the patio, hold a key function in the way space is experienced: they arouse impressions, sensations and emotions that calls for a phenomenological approach to space. Reappropriating the concepts of ambiance and atmosphere, this writing allows an alternative way of experiencing urban space, from which our contemporaneity could benefit, in order to inhabit Tunisia poetically.

Abstract In southern France, between 1963 and 1983, an innovative administrative body—the Interministerial Mission for the Development of the Languedoc-Roussillon Coastline—was established to oversee the major infrastructure works required for coastal development. Its objective was to accommodate one million holidaymakers within newly planned tourist units while preserving extensive areas of natural, undeveloped landscape. In 1964, a regional planning scheme was adopted, creating six New Tourist Units (Unités Touristiques Nouvelles, UTNs) along a 200-kilometre stretch of coastline. Each unit was placed under the responsibility of an architect-planner. Among them was Georges Candilis, who was entrusted with the Leucate–Barcarès UTN, spanning the departments of Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales, which constitute the focus of this study. The guiding philosophy of the project was to invent a new spirit of vacation living. Georges Candilis used the site as a testing ground for a new architectural approach. He sought to develop an architecture resolutely oriented toward outdoor living, in which holidaymakers would not live inside buildings but rather outside them. For Candilis, a residential complex—referred to as a “village”—was conceived as a combination of dwellings organized around small squares. Each dwelling consisted of an assembly of spaces known as functional blocks, among which the patio played a central role. Through this compositional logic, the architect developed a variety of patio-house village typologies as well as collective housing schemes. Candilis designed patios not only within residential settings but also in recreational and commercial facilities. Their functions varied according to specific needs: living space, source of natural light, or integration of vegetation. The 1973 oil crisis brought this ambitious undertaking to an abrupt halt. Subsequently, in the early 1980s, the provisions of the French Coastal Law (Loi Littoral) definitively ended the Leucate–Barcarès development project. The growth of these tourist units profoundly transformed environmentally sensitive natural areas, some of which evolved into genuine coastal towns. From an architectural perspective, the need to adapt existing housing to contemporary requirements raises questions about the future of the concepts originally developed by the architects who created these places. This, in turn, prompts reflection on the recognition of the heritage value of these sometimes fragile architectural ensembles and, consequently, on their preservation. To address these issues, administrative

Abstract The Case di Palma, designed by Umberto Riva in Stintino in 1959–60 and again in 1971–73, provide a privileged case study for examining the evolution of an architectural approach within the same site and under comparable climatic conditions. Conceived as holiday houses in a Mediterranean context, they explore temporary and seasonal dwelling through a sustained attention to spatial and climatic devices rather than to fixed typological forms. Drawing on a comparative analysis of the two projects, based on the study of six recurring architectural devices—wall, courtyard, patio, portico, threshold, and roof—this article investigates how these elements are progressively transformed into operative devices capable of regulating the climate, organizing circulation, and redistributing domestic uses. The first house is structured around an inward-looking organization centered on a courtyard conceived as both a formative void and a climatic regulator. In the later houses, this centrality gives way to a continuous system of intermediate spaces—side patios, porticoes, and covered passageways—articulated by an enclosing perimeter wall. The article argues that the two Case di Palma illustrate a process of abstraction of the Sardinian vernacular. Rather than reproducing its characteristic forms, Riva isolates a number of its operative principles—climatic protection, the organization of thresholds, the thickness of the wall, and the articulation between open and covered spaces—which he progressively recomposes into autonomous architectural devices. The comparative analysis thus seeks to demonstrate a shift from typological reference toward a design logic grounded in spatial experience and intermediate spaces. By moving the focus of analysis from typology to experience, and from form to device, the Case di Palma emerge as the site in which a design logic is elaborated through the activation of intermediate spaces and through a conception of architecture as a field of relationships, responsive to climatic, perceptual, and domestic variations. An Overview of the Historical Domestic Subterranean Water Infrastructure of Tunis 2. Exploring the Existing Cisterns and Wells of the Medina: Initial Observations from a Survey in the Pasha Street Neighborhood 3. Future Solutions for the Medina’s Hydraulic System Conclusion Abstract Beneath the central courtyards of the houses in the Medina of Tunis lies a largely overlooked infrastructure: the cisterns and wells that once supplied water to every household and enabled the city to weather the seasonal cycles of drought and abundance. This article explores the transformations and decline of the city’s pre-modern domestic water systems and the possibilities for reviving them. Drawing on field research covering forty courtyard houses in the vicinity of Rue du Pacha, this study adopts a historical, architectural and anthropological approach aimed at understanding the city’s vast dormant hydraulic heritage. The study reconstructs the operational logic of the Bīr and Mājil, a dual system of wells and cisterns that -together-generated not only the architectural form of the courtyard house, but also the urban fabric, as well as the social relationships woven within it. The sample covered by the survey reveals that a large part of this water infrastructure still physically exists, but what remains is largely neglected, disused or buried, and the practices that once ensured its upkeep have largely disappeared. This text calls for a re-evaluation of the water harvesting infrastructure as a heritage worth preserving and reusing, rather than as an inert relic. The Medina’s system of Bīr and Mājil embodies an ecological wisdom that is directly relevant to the water challenges facing Tunis and many other Mediterranean cities. Bringing it back to life requires conservation ethics in which reuse is a cultural commitment as much as it is a practical response to a future marked by water scarcity. Keywords: Medina, Water, Tunis, Well, Cistern, Bīr, Mājil, Reuse. Patio house versus chalet : reclaiming tradition 2. The incorporation of the patio into a new morphology 3. Incorporating the patio into the garden: the landscaped patio Conclusion Abstract Patios were connecting the traditional tapatía house with the Mediterranean, through an experiment that took place in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, during the 1920s and 1930s. At that time, a group of colleagues engineers, led by Luis Barragán and including Ignacio Díaz Morales, Rafael Urzúa, and Pedro Castellanos, rediscovered the universal and enduring values that link Mediterranean vernacular architecture with that of their place of origin. Thereafter, they formulated an archetype of single-family house that incorporated the courtyard tradition, in contrast to the chalet-style houses that were being developed at that time in the city’s urban expansions. After a trip to Europe in 1924, Barragán, deeply influenced by two key lessons—his visit to the Alhambra and the discovery of Ferdinand Bac’s work—returned to Guadalajara and shared his experience with his colleagues. Inspired by Bac’s books, they revisited the concept of the patio and garden within the house, reformulating a new relationship between interior and exterior. To support this argument, four representative design projects by each of these engineers are compared, illustrating their diverse approaches and reinterpretations of the patio and garden as an extension of the house, and how their implementation generates a new residential morphology in which tradition engages in a fruitful dialogue with modernity. Keywords: Luis Barragán, Ferdinand Bac, Guadalajara, patio, typology, garden. Nordic Regionalism 2. Case Study 1: Can Geroni 3. Case Study 2: Can Lis 4. Construction and Materials Analysis Conclusion Abstract Two houses, by Danish architects Jørn Utzon and Erik Christian Sørensen, set on the edge of Majorcan cliff present the opportunity to discuss the idea of the modern court-house in the Mediterranean. The authors, the one best known for the extra-ordinary design of the Sydney Opera House, among other masterpieces of contemporary architecture, the other for famous Danish works, challenged themselves to work in the warm environment of Majorca Island during the 60s and 70s. Two case studies, Can Lis and Can Geroni, that present themselves as masterly pieces of both contemporary and traditional craftmanship, able to dialogue with the natural environment and the cultural memory of the place. The extraordinary nature of the spaces that the architects build around the idea of an open courtyard house, experimenting with its variations and poetics, also lies in their ability to literally root these architectures in the Mediterranean context to which they belong. The genesis of the two projects traces a path of maturation of formal intention, which at times rejects the typology, but at the same time does not renounce an architectural programme that focuses on the individual and their experience of the natural surroundings in which they live. The selection of courtyard or patio layouts, and the use of this architectural element, emphasizes the architects’ deep understanding of the context in which they operate and their desire to establish a relationship with the natural (less visible now, due to urbanization). However, there is another element that is considered fundamental to all three projects (and perhaps to the good architectural projects that we like to define as “Mediterranean”): these designs convey a sense of respect for nature, which acts as a creative force within the project, at times intrusive, giving meaning and purpose to the project itself. Keywords: Mallorca, Jørn Utzon, Erik Christian Sørensen, Mediterranean architecture, Intercultural architecture.

Abstract This article analyses the troglodyte dwellings of Matmata (Tunisia) through the lens of systemic complexity, positioning the central sunken courtyard as an archetype of vernacular intelligence. Moving beyond purely climatic, technical or cultural interpretations, the study models the courtyard as a central operator and matrix that integrates and regulates five interdependent subsystems: geological, environmental, spatial, constructive, and socio-symbolic. It validates three hypotheses: (1) the dwelling’s performance stems from this systemic integration; (2) the courtyard’s morphology supports a profound spatial and cosmological semiotics; (3) this intelligence can be coded into a systemic model that formalizes the relations between subsystems and renders the archetype’s complexity intelligible not to produce forms but to build knowledge. The article highlights the contemporary relevance of this archetype, bearer of resilient design principles, and situates it within the Mediterranean family of sunken courtyards as “a multiple, a whole” (unitas multiplex): one instance of a shared type and an irreducibly singular system. Keywords: vernacular architecture, troglodyte courtyard, Matmata, systemic intelligence, systemic modelling.

Abstract The archaeological site of Bulla Regia, Tunisia, is distinguished by its houses with sunken courtyards, which are unique in the Roman world due to their systematic use and high level of sophistication. These architectural devices provide an exceptional case study for investigating Roman bioclimatic strategies in a Mediterranean semi-arid context. To overcome the limitations related to the fragmentary state of the ancient remains, this study adopts an integrated methodology combining Heritage Building Information Modeling (HBIM), thermo-aeraulic simulations, and a situated design approach. The HBIM model, developed from archaeological data, architectural surveys, and the reference corpora of Thébert (1985) and Aïachi (2003), is enriched through parametric reconstruction, allowing the exploration of multiple geometric scenarios according to varying levels of uncertainty. Climate simulations, calibrated using local climatic data and supported by sensitivity analyses, demonstrate the capacity of the sunken courtyard to reduce temperature fluctuations, stabilize the indoor microclimate, and promote effective natural ventilation through its double-level geometry. The integration of situated design enables an interpretation of these results in relation to ancient domestic practices and adaptive comfort, avoiding a purely technocentric reading. This research proposes a transferable methodological framework for the analysis of ancient architecture in hot climates and highlights the relevance of historical climatic knowledge for contemporary sustainable design.
