Abstract

The “Cultural Heritage of Water” abounds in Algeria for centuries. It illustrates a historical, societal and cultural dimension, but especially provides the populations with care and hygiene. In the 19th century, the new regulations introduced to improve the hygienic services allowed the growth of real Water towns in Europe. The colonial administration has also shown particular interest to the thermal springs of the colonized Algerian territories.

The main objective of this article is to identify the state in which this cultural heritage of water was in the aftermath of colonization, on the one hand, and to establish, on the other hand, under what conditions its new exploitation took place.

Some scenarios are immediately envisaged, such as the simple redevelopment of the infrastructures belonging to thermal or secular baths, or the construction of new thermal structures near natural springs or old ruined baths. These scenarios are confirmed for some examples of thermal establishments, like Hammams Mélouane and Bou Hanifia, located in the canter and west of the country. Colonial interventions have been considered, because of the insalubrities of these two former spas. It is the same for hammam N'bails-Nador, in Constantinois. This thermal bath of Roman origin seems to be preserved, but poorly ventilated and lit. It was necessary to undertake new adjustments to improve their operation.

The study of these three thermal establishments makes it possible to determine the new installations started within the framework of the promotion and the improvement of the thermalism in colony. Unpublished archival sources will be systematically exploited and analyzed. They will be completed by in-situ investigations allowing to notice the degree of conservation of these thermal establishments, then to make comparisons between their old and actual states.
