Abstract
At the end of the Tunisian campaign (1942-1943) which marked the liberation of the country from German occupation, the government of Free France undertook a vast program of reconstruction (1943-1955) over the whole of Tunisian territory.
In a difficult context of shortage of construction materials and emergency, a fruitful architectural and urban production will paradoxically emerge.
This period marks the height of modern architectural movements which rely on the rationalization and standardization of construction processes as well as on the standardization and optimization of architectural design. Under the impetus of hygienic theories and the recommendations of active pedagogy, the new model of what will be called the "new school" will gradually be put in place. This model will be generalized in Europe, but also in Tunisia. The Carthage high school (1949-1957) designed by the architect Jacques Marmey, is in this sense a real prototype and a model of innovation through which all the new recommendations concerning school buildings will materialize.
This article aims to go back to the sources of the standards put in place towards the end of the 19th century and since the beginning of the 20th century. Tracing the evolution of these standards that have shaped the school space, we will provide answers as to the school model that predominates to this day.
