Abstract

During Antiquity, the relations between the two shores of the Mediterranean were fertile and very close, namely between the current territories of Northern Tunisia and Southern Portugal. Since the regions of Tunis and the Algarve were maritime, navigation allowed easy and direct contact between Carthage and the Algarve Roman cities of Ossonoba and Balsa, according to an old tradition dating back to the Carthaginian occupation of the Algarve during the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, which, in turn, bases its occupation on the Phoenician colonisation of the Mediterranean 500 years earlier. From the analysis of the known archaeological record, namely epigraphy and import materials from Roman times, the different connections at a distance between those two regions in Antiquity are demonstrated. Not only the economic, but also the cultural and social relations between Carthage and Balsa are addressed. Balsa was a small port city on the western edge of the Roman Empire, which, being on the route between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, was perfectly integrated into the maritime trade flows of the Roman Empire, maintaining a close relationship with the province of Africa Proconsularis and other regions of the Roman world.

Keywords:

Roman maritime cities, interprovincial relations, distant contacts, Lusitania province, Africa proconsularis province.
