Abstract
The historical geography of the province of Hāz in the Middle Ages: a two-pole emirate.
Arabic sources discussing the Haz region in the medieval era remain scarce and insufficient to thoroughly illuminate the political, social, and economic history of the first Alaouite emirate. This emirate is situated west of the Zāb march, east of the Sulaymanid emirates, and north of the Rustumid State. The circumstances surrounding its foundation, territorial development, and its relationship with neighbors also remain shrouded in mystery.
Our research will focus on the historical geography of the Hāz emirate, with the eponymous city serving as the governmental center in the Zanāta region in the middle of the third century of the Hijra. An important aspect of the emirate is that, as part of territorial expansion, the governor established a second center in the Ṣanhāja mountains, governed by Ḥamza ibn al-Ḥasan, and the city was named in his honor.
In the detailed development, we will concentrate on two essential points. The first point concerns the location of the city of Hāz. We will rely on the comparison of geographical sources. The second point, we will study the toponymy of the city built by Ḥamza ibn al-Ḥasan, which presents a multiplicity of names such as a city, market, or village. We will highlight the emergence of a new toponym, "ḥāit," as an eastern agricultural structure encompassing the plains of Ḥamza, similar to existing toponyms in Ifriqiya andcorresponding to agricultural estates.
