Abstract

The madrasas of Tripoli of the West during the Middle Ages

In the Maghrib, the history of the madrasa as a learning institution is still unwritten. Although it appeared in Baghdad in the mid-5th/11th century, the madrasa as a studying institution progressively reached the Islamic West at the end of the 6th/13th century, supported by the post-Almohad sultanal dynasties. For that reason, the madrasa rooted deep within both the urban and cultural contexts of their capitals, polarizing the scholarly communities. Beyond these well-known cases, there are clues that « provincial » madrasa-s also existed. In Tripoli especially, two madrasa-s are documented for the Islamic era, they remain invisible nowadays because they did not leave any material remain. The first one was founded by the Hafsid power in the middle of the 7th/13th century, while the second was created by an emir of the Banū Ṯābit dynasty, who ruled the city in the following century. Processing the scarce available written data we have about these madrasa-s, I will show in this paper what where the functions of the madrasa away from the specific contexts of the capital cities, especially in a marginal district. I will also evaluate the influence of these two madrasa-s on the scholars’ networks polarized by the city, that was a major place of learning at the scale of the Mediterranean Islamic world.
