Abstract

In the history of colonial Carthage in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a religious minority - the French Catholic congregations - contributed significantly to the modification of the social condition of the Tunisian inhabitants and, to a lesser extent to that of the Europeans. It also left its mark on the urban and architectural landscape of the city, which at the beginning of the colonial era was in ruins. This contribution was made possible by the congregations’ powerful rooting in the territory. The congregations had a great influence on the inhabitants through their educational and health works. This article is devoted to the teaching and architecture of the French Catholic missionaries' congregational schools in Carthage in the contemporary period, with a focus on the teaching and the architectural styles adopted for these schools. This study is supported by an analysis of the colonial and evangelical aims of the missionaries, to understand the orientation of the teaching and the ideological underpinning tinged with orientalism of the stylistic choices in the architecture of the school buildings.
