Abstract
Islamic palatial architecture was born in the East, and was associated with the movement of Arab-Islamic conquests and the creation of the camp-cities « amṣār ». Each city has a palace best known by Dār al-Imāra, (“House of government”), which stood near the qibla wall of the Great Mosque, as an establishment of power and habitation.
While some remains of the urban palaces of Kūfa, ʿAnjar, Qaṣr al- Ḥayr al-Sharqī, and ʿAmmān, have been preserved, in Kairouan nothing remains of Dār al-Imāra, these vestiges have disappeared. Sources report that it was transformed in the XIV century into wheat silos archaeologically approved, making Kairouan a capital without a memorial site.
The description of Dār al-Imāra of Kūfa, which was excavated by Muhammad ʿAli Muṣṭafā, could be applied to Dār al-Imāra of Kairouan, as the organisation of the camp-cities is distinguished by a regular appearance that repeats the same pattern. The new Umayyad cities could also play a role in this conception. In fact, the plan analysis of the urban palaces of the East reveals an almost perfect similarity between the Kairouan model and those of Iraq and Bilād al-Shām.
