Abstract
The Tunisian identity is far from being unique and rigid, it is rather multiple and diverse, it is closely linked to the history of the country and to the different civilizations that have followed it. Tunisian cities embody the sedimentation of these eras and these civilizations. They relate to urban and architectural peculiarities which draw their origin from the ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary history of the country.
Throughout their history, public places in the city of Tunis have taken different forms and have supported multiple uses. Their urban and architectural production has been strongly influenced by the political, social and economic context of the country. They were the testimony of the urban evolution of the city and the expression of its urban and architectural identity. In the pre-colonial period, the squares were simple residual and discreet spaces, they confirmed the introverted character of the medina, symbol of Arab-Muslim architecture and town planning. During the colonial period, public places were transformed into public places of gathering, conviviality or pleasure gardens. They were characterized by regular shapes, larger dimensions but above all they displayed a ceremonial architecture of a victorious, eclectic or Arabist style. After independence, the effort made to revive the country and develop cities, infrastructure and public equipment did not prevent the identity dimension of the country shared between an ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary past. The public places reflected this hesitation and this tension. The climate of dictatorship and oppression of the 1980s accentuated the marginalization of places by attacking them or causing their death. However, since the revolution things have changed a lot, the citizen claims his public space, appropriates it more and submits it to different uses, thus announcing a new relationship to the other and to his identity.
This article explores the notion of identity between the theoretical concept and the ideological discourse, it develops the historical, morphological and identity aspect of Tunisian cities over time. It analyses the production process of public places in the city of Tunis and their role in the display of contextualized identity architecture. Finally, he announces the questioning of the urban and architectural form as a carrier of identity, in other words, which architecture for which Tunisian identity.
