Abstract

This article offers a new reading on the similarity of the Ottoman “Ocak”, Vağak in Arabic, with that established by Sinan in Tunis and called “Dar al-yenšeriyye”. It has also been revealed that the Turkish administrative institution called “Ağa Kapısı” adopted by the Turks in Istanbul is similar to the Divan institution that Sinan established in the new Regency of Tunis. This military-administrative body of four thousand janissaries consists of a ruling class called in Turkish “Cemaat”, a kind of several communities of great Turkish chiefs “Ağa-s” grouped together in the Divan Institute. These communities are subdivided into a hierarchy of groups, and they carried out both military and administrative tasks. At the top of this hierarchy is the head of the Janissaries called “Ağat-al-yenšeriyye”, then in second place is the group of “Blukbaši-s”, then those of “Odabaši-s” and finally, below, there are the small soldiers under the name “Yoldaš-s”.

Finally, the article discusses the moral link between the Ottoman army and the Sufi spirit of Bektâši mysticism. The text of an Ottoman inscription “osmanlı” engraved on the lintel of a room at the bottom of the Divan has just informed us about the existence of a mausoleum of Grand Šeiḫ Ḥaği Bektaš Velī, the leader of a Sufi order “tarikat” practiced in Anatolia since the fifteenth century, and the name from which the practice comes. The brotherhood, faithful to Turkish Janissaries, was established in Tunis through the Janissaries of Cairo, who participated in the battle of conquest next to Sinan. It was the Ottoman soldiers, disciples of the Bektâši “Gaygusuz” movement in Cairo, who were behind the establishment of this “tarikat” in the Divan of Tunis. After being called by Sinan Paša to participate in the battle against the Spanish, and without return, these soldiers chose to settle as owners of sectors of the Timar in the new conquered regency.
