Abstract
The mountainous areas of south-eastern Tunisia have experienced continuous human occupation throughout its history and in different forms. The Berbers, massively settled in these mountains since Antiquity and until today, founded a rich civilization. Surveys based mainly on careful prospecting show this wealth. This Dahar massif is strewn with a series of remains of fortifications, watchtowers, ksar, intended to control the entire territory and villages scattered on the surrounding ridges.
Within the framework of this study, we are particularly interested in the site of Matmata founded, since the early Middle Ages, by a Berber tribe which bears the same name. This tribe has settled in the heart of northern Dahar, on a site that offers a strategic location. The Matmata have developed a model of habitat that adapts to the natural environment and meets the requirements and needs of mountain people. This article does not claim to be exhaustive, but proposes a reflection on the forms of settlement as well as on the organization of the territory, the fortified habitat and the particular lateral and "vertico-lateral" troglodyte habitat.
