Abstract

From the "perfectly oriented" hill to "the hidden furniture in the wall ". The hygienist formula of modern housing facing the context. Tunis 1943

Following world war II damages, an ambitious housing program has been undertaken during the reconstruction of Tunisia where hygiene was an important issue in accordance with the modern reference of the “architects of reconstruction”. Referring to the lessons of the mythical text of “ la charte d’Athènes” they had the opportunity to apply in El Menzah the prototypical spatial devices that modern avant-garde of the interwar period united within CIAM set up and disseminated in the world. The words left by the Tunisian reconstuctors in the archives show that both these forms constructed in space and the ideas that inhabit them made the trip to Tunis. In that regard, it is interesting to observe from a hygienic perspective, how this transfer of that architectural and urban model takes place. In this paper, we will try to restore the hygienist ideas embodied in these forms invented in Europe and established in Tunisia on the one hand and to observe how the context shapes them on the other hand.

Diachronic, this reading seeks to place the Tunisian experience in the general history of a modern model which, by wanting to be universal, considerably marks architectural thought and practice in the world. A model which is sometimes perpetuated through some of its attributes, sometimes called into question and readjusted according to the issues that are renewed in each era.
